Separate bookkeeping status from return status
The business’s transaction summary and the evidence of a tax filing answer different questions. Identify the period represented by the books and which return is being discussed. Keep any actual final return and submission information available. An organized account list does not establish that the tax treatment was reviewed or that a return for that year was filed.
Identify the entries that need explanation
Preserve the underlying sources and describe any difference or uncertain purpose. A bank transaction, owner transfer, and expense record can require their own context. Do not revise an original source to make a summary appear reconciled. Mark the question for review so the proposed task can determine what additional facts are needed under the relevant rules.
Define the work before preparing material
Ask whether assistance concerns examining the records, preparing an earlier return, or reviewing a separate balance issue. Understand who checks the information and handles any agreed submission. Keep actual filing evidence distinct from a prepared packet. IRS recordkeeping and past-due filing resources provide context; the individual facts and current requirements determine responsibilities for the year involved.
